Winner of the Louis B. Mayer Award. Created by an American-born playwright-director who has become one of the most celebrated figures in the modern British theatre, this diabolically clever (and frequently funny) play was first presented as part of the Olympic Arts Festival in Los Angeles and went to Broadway in 1987. It was produced at the Nederlander Theatre with Frank Langella as Sherlock Holmes and Donal Donnelly as Doctor Watson. Illuminating aspects to the master sleuth's character heretofore ignored, the play is both true to the spirit of the original and a totally fresh and absorbing theatrical excursion.

"Sherlock's Last Case is certainly a wonder … throwing social consciousness to the wind and simply entertaining an audience with a delightful theatrical sleight-of-hand."
LA Daily News

"Part spoof, part loving tribute and all fun…"
The Register

"…the play combines light, occasionally absurd, humor with all the twists and turns of a first-rate whodunit."
Hollywood Progress

NOTE: This production contains brief pipe smoking
and occasional gunshots.

It may be hot outside, but TKD is cooler than it's ever been! We installed new seating and ceiling fans over the summer to improve your theatre-going experience. New @ TKD: "HearSay"

Wednesday, Aug 11, 7:30 pm
Script TBD

The reading is free; donations accepted.

A play begins with a writer; it grows with the actors; it becomes complete with an audience.

Please join Theatre Knoxville Downtown's new effort to help local writers complete their works by hearing their plays read aloud and by hearing audience reactions.

Theatre Knoxville Downtown presents HearSay, the ongoing play reading project!

This new project is an informal collaboration between playwrights, actors and audience members. You are invited to submit your completed (or nearly completed) work for consideration ... volunteer to read a part ... or participate as an audience member, offering constructive comments and reactions for the author to digest. We are also open to hearing published plays from favorite authors, from Aeschylus to Zola. Just submit a suggestion for that classic you've always wanted to read.

Our scheduling will be flexible, depending largely on availability constraints of the theatre, but in general we'll hold these events every 4-6 weeks. Email HearSay@theatreknoxville.com for more information.

The Hallelujah Girls
by Jones, Hope & Wooten
Sep. 10-26, 2010

[Auditions] Hilarity abounds when the feisty females of Eden Falls, Georgia, decide to shake up their lives. The action in this rollicking Southern comedy takes place in SPA-DEE-DAH!, the abandoned church-turned day spa where this group of friends gathers every Friday afternoon. After the loss of a dear friend, the women realize time is precious and if they're going to change their lives and achieve their dreams they have to get on it now! But Sugar Lee, their high-spirited, determined leader, has her hands full keeping the women motivated. Carlene's given up on romance, having buried three husbands. Nita's a nervous wreck from running interference between her problematic son and his probation officer. Mavis' marriage is so stagnant she's wondering how she can fake her own death to get out of it. And sweet, simple Crystal entertains them all, singing Christmas carols with her own, hilarious lyrics.

The comic tension mounts when a sexy, ex-boyfriend shows up unexpectedly, a marriage proposal comes from an unlikely suitor and Sugar Lee's arch rival vows she'll stop at nothing to steal the spa away from her. By the time the women rally together to overcome these obstacles and launch their new, improved lives, you've got a side-splitting, joyful comedy that will make you laugh out loud and shout "Hallelujah!"

“These authors are terrific! They have the perfect ear for Southern comedy… In the thirty years that I’ve been here, this show is one of the best.”
—Michael Genevie, Abbeville Opera House, Abbeville, NC

“If people want to forget their troubles for two hours and laugh out loud, THE HALLELUJAH GIRLS is the show for them.”
Index Journal, Greenwood, SC

“Garner LOVES those Hallelujah Girls!! The cast could barely get through the show due to all the laughter from the crowd! Thank you, thank you for this fun, fabulous show!”
— Beth Honeycutt, The Towne Players, Garner, NC
